Sustainability in Action: CUHK’s Eco Journey 2024-2025

The Student Experience and Development Section, Office of Student Affairs (OSA), has organized several impactful green events during the 2024-2025 academic year, including the Eco Tour to Australia and Eco Fun Day: Play Green, Live Green. These initiatives aim to raise student awareness of environmental protection and sustainability, empowering them to actively contribute to conservation efforts and adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives.

Eco Tour to Australia

In March, 18 selected students and OSA embarked on an overseas journey to Wild Mountain in Queensland, Australia, for a 5-day immersive environmental experience camp in a government-recognized nature conservation area. Through hands-on conservation activities, students gained insights into local ecological protection policies and acquired diverse conservation knowledge. The students also participated in various activities to foster a deeper connection with nature and promote sustainable practices, including:

  • Invasive Species Removal: Students removed invasive plant species to protect native flora, conserve koala habitats, and maintain the area’s ecological balance.
  • Soil Management: They addressed termite overpopulation, which threatens local environments and residences, and they assisted in turning and controlling soil conditions.
  • Sustainable Infrastructure Maintenance: Students helped maintain eco-friendly wooden cabins built from recycled timber, supporting sustainable infrastructure within the conservation area.

Eco Fun Day: Play Green, Live Green

In May, OSA partnered with GREEN@SHA TIN and the Environmental Protection Department to host an engaging environmental learning event at Cultural Square. The Eco Fun Day: Play Green, Live Green brought together nearly 200 participants for a day of interactive activities focused on sustainability:

  • Game Booth and Carbon Life Station: Participants tested their recycling knowledge by sorting waste and learned about clean recycling and low-carbon living through interactive challenges.
  • Upcycling Workshops: Attendees transformed waste paper into stylish, functional scented stones and turned bottle caps into plant containers, promoting green living.
  • EcoSwap Market: Participants took home second-hand items, giving resources a new lease of life and encouraging waste reduction.

Through these initiatives during 2024-2025, the OSA “Go Eco-friendly!” project has successfully fostered a culture of environmental responsibility and sustainable living among students. By empowering students to adopt green practices in various aspects of their lives, these initiatives have contributed to promoting sustainable development within the campus and community.
