Global Internship Programme: A Journey of Professional Exploration

The Global Internship Programme (GIP) offers students invaluable internship opportunities in Mainland China and around the globe, helping them sharpen interpersonal skills, gain workplace experience, foster personal growth, and broaden their career prospects. In 2025, over 400 students undertake internships in diverse destinations including Australia, France, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Singapore, Spain, South Africa, Thailand, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Mainland China — embarking on a journey of cross-cultural exchange and professional exploration.

Exploring the Mainland Workplace — Stepping into Shanghai’s Corporate World

This year, GIP launched the Mainland Career Exploration Series, offering students the chance to gain firsthand experience in four major cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, and Nanjing. The initiative aims to deepen students’ understanding of workplace culture and career opportunities in Mainland China.

Shanghai has drawn strong interest, with around 80 students undertaking internships across the city. The Shanghai Corporate Internship Programme was particularly popular and attracted 32 participants. With support from the Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai and the Office of Student Affairs, placements spanned a wide spectrum of industries, including banking and finance, real estate, legal services, healthcare, innovation and technology, e-commerce, professional consulting, and government-related organisations — offering students firsthand exposure to the city’s dynamic business environment.

“This internship programme provides a unique opportunity for our students’ multi-faceted growth,” Ms. Tam remarked. “By stepping out of your comfort zones, you will gain insights that go beyond textbooks — shaping your future careers and enriching your personal lives while creating lifelong memories through this transformative journey.”

Diverse Internship Opportunities Across Industries and Destinations

GIP provides a series of themed experiential internship programmes tailored to students from diverse academic disciplines. Specialized programmes focusing on medicine and culture run from May to June, allowing students to engage themselves in real-world settings and deepen their understanding of their committed fields.

The Experiential Exchange at Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University in Beijing recruited students majoring in medical and healthcare-related fields for hands-on learning experience at a Class A comprehensive hospital and rehabilitation centre. Participants engaged in clinical observations, diagnostic work, and medical operations, gaining valuable insights into healthcare practices at one of leading institutions in Mainland.

In parallel, the Xi’an Cultural and Commercial Internship Programme provided opportunities for students passionate in cultural and creative industries. Interns were placed in museums, cultural innovation enterprises, and commercial organizations, where they explored Xi’an’s rich heritage, engaged with local culture and history, and considered the development potential of the cultural industry alongside heritage conservation — blending academic inquiry with practical experience.

A Meaningful Close, A Promising Start

While most GIP internship placements will conclude by late August, participating students can reflect on the experience and takeaways from this unique opportunity — applying their academic knowledge in practical workplaces while establishing strong foundations for their future careers and professional development.
