They had the opportunity to closely observe the flag-raising ceremony at Tiananmen Square and witness the professional drills of the Flag Guard; climbed the Great Wall to appreciate the majestic landscapes of their homeland and feel the aspirations of the Chinese nation; experienced the rich charm of traditional Chinese culture in Beijing; visited Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU) to immerse themselves in campus culture, and engaged with the university’s flag-raising team to share techniques and enhance their skills. Through this activity, the 6 members of the CUHK Flag-guard Team deepened their understanding of their country, cultivated patriotism, and improved their skills, making the trip both enriching and meaningful.

Cheung Yuk Yan, Scarlett, delivered a welcoming speech on behalf of the Delegation at BLCU.

“During my secondary school years, I was fortunate to become a founding member of the school’s flag-raising team. At that time, I was simply attracted by the solemnity of the ceremony. However, as my service time grew longer, and I taught younger students, and later joined the National Flag Guard in university, I gradually understood that raising the national flag is not just a ritual but a responsibility and a legacy of spirit. Every time the national flag rises slowly in the morning light, a sense of pride wells up in my heart, allowing me to deeply appreciate the true meaning of patriotism. Our instructor often says, ‘Pursue excellence and strive for perfection’—this phrase made me realise that every training session and every detail of each movement is a strict requirement of self and a solemn commitment to the national flag. This commitment embodies the love and loyalty each member of the guard has for our country.

As a university student from Hong Kong, being able to come to the capital, Beijing, and personally experience the development and vitality of our country fills me with gratitude. This exchange not only allowed me to witness the excellence of the students at BLCU but also helped me realise that the youth from both regions share a common love for our nation.”
