Vice-Chancellor's Cup 2024: Triumphant Experience for Postgraduate Students

The Vice-Chancellor's Cup (VC Cup) is a grand sports extravaganza among the staff of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). After a decade-long hiatus, this year’s event came back with the inclusion of postgraduate students to participate for the first time, adding a new dimension of competitive spirit and camaraderie.

Close to 70 postgraduate students, hailing from Hong Kong, mainland China, Canada, France, Italy, and the Philippines, were engaged in the event. The Office of Student Affairs (OSA) played a crucial role in coordinating and managing the participation of the postgraduate students. Over the past four months, OSA provided a great deal of assistance, from recruiting players to forming teams and designing and ordering team jerseys. Moreover, a campaign featuring the postgraduate student teams was launched on social media platforms, enabling the CUHK community to keep abreast of updates.

The VC Cup 2024 has been successfully concluded, with the postgraduate students showcasing their exceptional skills and teamwork across multiple sports items. The football and table tennis teams were crowned champions, and the badminton and basketball teams secured the title of 2nd runner-up. In a remarkable feat, the postgraduate students clinched the coveted Overall Champion title, a testament to their enthusiasm, perseverance, and athletic skills.

The event not only provided a platform for postgraduate students to display their sporting talents but also fostered a sense of unity within the CUHK community. It catalyzed building stronger bonds among students from different cultural and academic backgrounds, promoting a vibrant campus culture. Yang Zhenchuan, captain of the badminton team, feels honoured to participate in this prestigious event. “The VC Cup is a magnificent sporting occasion that serves to unite people and promote the spirit of sportsmanship. It was a genuine privilege for me to be the captain of our team. The experience was truly memorable, particularly as it allowed me to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with my teammates from different countries and regions, ultimately winning the third-place prize! After the competition, our teammates and I also forged valuable friendships.”
