21 students from CUHK and CUHK-Shenzhen embarked on an eight-day Wu Zhi Qiao service-learning trip to Fujian’s Yushan Island, renowned as one of “China’s Top Ten Most Beautiful Islands”, from 7 to 14 July 2025. Although they encountered typhoon and heavy rainfall at the beginning of the tour, the team immersed themselves in local cultural preservation. They learnt traditional craftsmanship, such as net weaving, boat building, Pengpeng drum performances, and wedding customs from villagers. Students created multimedia materials and oral history records on these traditions.
The students transformed the century-old fishing village’s archives and antiques into creative exhibitions and cultural products, injecting new vitality into rural revitalisation. This initiative not only fostered cross-regional communication but also established a valuable platform for rural development. More importantly, all participants experienced the uniqueness of the island culture and contributed to cultural conservation.
