New Uniform Debut Marks a New Chapter for the CUHK Flag-guard Team

The Flag-raising Ceremony held on 7 September 2026, the first day of the new academic year at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), marked a significant milestone for the CUHK Flag-guard Team. For the first time, the Team’s 23 members appeared in a newly designed uniform that uniquely reflects the identity and spirit of CUHK, successfully carrying out the ceremony with professionalism, confidence and pride.

More than 130 guests attended the ceremony, including the Hon Alice Mak Mei-kuen, Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs of the HKSAR Government, Ms Wan Ning, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Education and Youth Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR, Professor Hon Jasper Tsang Yok-sing, Honorary Professor in CUHK’s Faculty of Social Science, Dr Norman Chan Tak-lam, Vice-Chairman of the CUHK Council, Professor Dennis Lo Yuk-ming, CUHK Vice-Chancellor and President, alongside Legislative Council members, members of the University Council, senior management, representatives of Colleges and Faculties, staff, students and alumni.

A highlight of this year’s ceremony was the official debut of the Team’s new uniform. Featuring CUHK’s signature purple and gold as its primary colours, the uniform was specially designed to incorporate distinctive CUHK elements while preserving the dignity and solemnity associated with flag-guard duties. The elegant design not only enhances the professional image of the Team, but also reinforces members’ sense of belonging to the University. It symbolises their commitment to serving the nation, Hong Kong and CUHK, while carrying forward the values of patriotism, discipline and responsibility.

The new uniform originated from the CUHK Flag-guard Team Uniform Design Competition, which encouraged students to contribute creative ideas and participate in shaping the future identity of the Team. One Champion Award and two Second Prize Awards (tie) were presented during the ceremony. The Champion Award was awarded to team members WU, Ruohan Dora and QIU, Chak Ki, whose design concept was selected as the foundation of the new uniform. The design was subsequently refined for production, with valuable advice and great support from Professor Dennis Lo Yuk-ming, the Vice-Chancellor CUHK, throughout the process. The result is a uniform that combines functionality, symbolism and strong CUHK characteristics, representing a new chapter in the development of the Team.

Following the Flag-raising Ceremony, a Recognition Ceremony was held to honour the dedication and contributions of team members and group leaders over the past year. Awards and certificates were presented by Miss Mak, Dr Chan and Professor Lo. A total of 18 appointment certificates, two certificates of appreciation for graduating members, and three certificates of appreciation for group leaders were awarded. Among the award recipients, Group Leader Miss Luk Man Ting (Sandy) received the “Best Flag-guard Team Member of The Chinese University of Hong Kong 2025-26” Award in recognition of her exemplary performance, leadership and outstanding contributions to the development of the Team.

Professor Ko Wing-hung, Associate Vice-President (Student Experience) and University Dean of Students, CUHK, introduced the CUHK Flag-guard Team at the ceremony. Established in 2023 and managed by the Office of Student Affairs, the Team has attracted more than 70 student members over the past three years. Team members receive professional foot drill and flag-raising training, and actively participate in flag-raising ceremonies, exchange activities and competitions both on and off campus. The impressive performance of the Team at the ceremony, coupled with the debut of the new uniform, reflected both the growth and maturity of the CUHK Flag-guard Team since its establishment.
