Navigating university life in a new culture brings growth opportunities alongside uncertainty. To support for the vibrant global community at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), the Wellness and Counselling Centre (WACC) of the Office of Student Affairs has launched the Multicultural Psychological Support Service (MPSS), a dedicated initiative delivering culturally responsive psychological support to non-local students, exchange students and local students with substantial cross-cultural backgrounds.
Personalized Support – Individual Counselling
MPSS offers personalized multicultural counselling service (6-12 sessions) tailored to students’ unique needs and cultural adaption challenges. Culturally attuned counsellors walk alongside each student, to build resilience, strengthen self-understanding and navigate the rhythms at CUHK.
Connection Circle – Sharing Support Groups
In September, MPSS organized two sharing support groups for non-local students.
CUHK友你同行- 情緒調適與人際支持 (Putonghua Group)
This sharing group combines art, cognitive behavioral tools, and mindfulness practices for self-discovery, emotional regulation, and interpersonal connections.
Interpersonal Skills to Navigate Your Relationships Successfully (English Group)
Through role-play and interactive workshops, participants mastered skills on communication, conflict resolution and trust-building to enhance relationships across academic, professional, and personal domains.
Professional Wellness Workshops
In October, MPSS organized two workshops respectively on self-care.
Nurturing the Soul: The Power of Art in Self-Care (English & Putonghua Sessions)
The bilingual sessions (English/Putonghua) are where creativity meets self-care. Art-based interventions are used for self-expression, emotional processing and social bonding. Participants gain accessible tools for sustained self-care and stress management.
LivingWork safeTALK
In late October and early November, the internationally recognized suicide prevention training, LivingWork safeTALK, was open to all full-time non-local students. Ms. Sandy Sinn, experienced Positive Psychology Practitioner, Youth Mental Health Educator, introduced the four-step TALK framework—Tell, Ask, Listen, and KeepSafe, equipping students to respond to suicide risk, strengthening the safety net within student community.
